Your choices at a glance
| Route type | Useful when | Additional planning |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle round trip | You want a simple US departure-city plan | Exact terminal, international calls and port hours |
| Vancouver round trip | The route and flights fit your trip | Canadian entry and airport-to-port logistics |
| One-way cross-gulf | You want several days on land in Alaska | Seward or Whittier transfer and different flights |
| Cruise plus land package | You want coordinated transport | Actual nights, bus access and inclusions |
A one-way route earns its transfer when you want the land stay
Norwegian Jade’s published Vancouver–Whittier program is the one-way comparison here. It can place you nearer an Anchorage-area land extension, while Seattle-return Norwegian programs return to the same embarkation city. Vancouver-return Holland America programs supply another Inside Passage shape. Read the selected sailing itself: the named ports, scenic days and sequence define the purchase.
Whittier does not mean an Anchorage hotel is at the port. Arrange the actual transfer and leave a night where the next day’s activity begins. A Denali extension and a Seward coast extension serve different landscapes; combining both requires the fuller land itinerary, not a spare afternoon after disembarkation.
| Route | Strong reason to choose | Transfer consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle return | A simpler same-airport holiday | Pre-cruise Seattle night and correct terminal |
| Vancouver return | The selected route and Canadian gateway | Canada flights and entry arrangements |
| Vancouver–Whittier | A purposeful Alaska land extension | Port transfer, separate airports and land nights |

Compare the usable shore time
A port name is not a whole day. Read arrival, departure, excursion check-in and the return requirement together. A longer sailing can add useful time or different calls, but that must come from the actual program rather than the ship’s general Alaska page.
Choose the glacier interval and two shore priorities before adding excursions at every stop. Retain a walkable town or shorter alternative when a weather-sensitive outing is canceled. Compare the cabin and package after deciding the route; otherwise an appealing fare can lock you into the wrong airports or leave no time for the land visit you wanted.

Compare the scenic day explicitly
Read which glacier or scenic area is scheduled, whether access can change and how much time the itinerary allocates. Two routes with similar port lists may offer different days at sea.
Do not substitute a generic “glacier viewing” phrase for the actual itinerary description. Weather and operational decisions can affect the experience.
Count the extra nights and transfers
A one-way route can need different flights, port transfers, hotels and possibly a rental or rail segment. Price them before comparing cruise fares.
Check arrival times and the last practical onward service. A transfer that works on paper may be too tight once disembarkation, luggage and a delayed arrival are included.
Real ships and published itinerary choices
The ship, route and season belong together. These are published programs, not live availability or fare quotes; choose the exact sailing with the operator.

Norwegian Joy — Alaska
Norwegian Joy’s published 2027 program includes a Sunday-departure week from Seattle and longer nine- or ten-day trips. Choose the duration before comparing fares: those are different itineraries.
Choose it for: A Seattle-based option when choosing between a week at sea and a longer Alaska sailing.
The tradeoff: Do not compare the seven-day and nine- or ten-day variants as if their ports and total cost were the same.

Koningsdam — Alaska Inside Passage
Koningsdam is named in Holland America’s seven-day 2027 Inside Passage program from Vancouver. The published route calls at Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan; use the selected sailing to establish the glacier day and time ashore.
Choose it for: A Vancouver-return alternative to Seattle when the actual Alaska route and flights suit the group.
The tradeoff: Vancouver is in Canada. Include the correct travel documents, airport journey and a pre-cruise night; an eight-day Inside Passage sailing is a different product.

Norwegian Jade — Alaska
Norwegian Jade links Vancouver and Whittier in a published seven-day 2027 program. This is the option to connect with an Alaska land trip, with separate end airports and a transfer between Whittier and Anchorage.
Choose it for: A one-way Alaska sailing that can connect to an Anchorage-area land extension.
The tradeoff: Whittier is not Anchorage; plan the transfer, separate end airports and the actual glacier itinerary.
