Choose the river before the ship
The Columbia and Snake Rivers program connects the Portland area and Clarkston in the Pacific Northwest. A New Orleans-return Highlights of the Mississippi program uses the lower river and can pair with a city stay. An Upper Mississippi program between St. Louis and St. Paul has different endpoints and scenery; it is not a northern segment casually added to the New Orleans loop.
American Harmony and American Encore are named Columbia/Snake riverboats; American Symphony appears in the Mississippi programs compared below. Select the current ship and date shown by the operator. The published duration is a program description, not a promise of unchanged navigation or access at every shore stop.
| Waterway | Published shape | City-extension distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Columbia and Snake | Portland-area–Clarkston, 9 days / 8 nights | Seattle is a separate land extension |
| Lower Mississippi | New Orleans return, 8 days / 7 nights | Use New Orleans as the city base |
| Upper Mississippi | St. Louis–St. Paul, 9 days / 8 nights | Separate end airports and transfers |

Compare a bundled river fare with the same land costs
Read the selected package for meals, shore excursions, gratuities and transfers, then identify exclusions. A bundled quote cannot be compared fairly with a cruise-only headline or a hotel room alone. Choose the cabin layout for the actual party, including access requirements and the time you expect to spend indoors.
Confirm the embarkation dock and transfer in the operator’s documents. Water levels or navigation conditions can change the program, so understand the operator’s itinerary-change and cancellation terms. Keep the city extension useful on its own and avoid placing a distant excursion directly before the embarkation window.

Compare shore programs carefully
Check which excursions are included, which are optional and whether there are choices at each stop. Ask about walking distance, stairs, bus time and accessibility for the actual activities.
A small ship does not automatically make every shore visit easy. The route from the dock and the historic buildings visited can matter more than the vessel size.
Understand the pace
A guided program can make logistics easier, but it may offer less independent time than a land-based trip. Decide whether coordinated visits or flexible days are more valuable to you.
Compare time in port and any evening access ashore. Do not assume a destination listed in the itinerary means a full day there.
Plan for operational changes
River conditions and other operational factors can alter routes or shore arrangements. Read the line’s contract and change policy, and understand what is offered if the itinerary changes.
Add a sensible arrival buffer and price the complete journey to and from the actual ports. An attractive fare can be less useful if the flight connections require several extra travel days.
Real ships and published itinerary choices
The ship, route and season belong together. These are published programs, not live availability or fare quotes; choose the exact sailing with the operator.

American Harmony — Columbia & Snake Rivers
American Harmony is listed for the Columbia and Snake Rivers corridor. The published nine-day Portland-to-Clarkston plan starts with a Portland hotel night before boarding; count the hotel and cruise portions separately.
Choose it for: A Pacific Northwest river route when the waterway and shore visits are the main attraction.
The tradeoff: A Seattle city stay is a separate extension. Confirm the actual embarkation dock and transfer in the travel documents.

American Encore — Columbia & Snake Rivers
American Encore appears on the same Columbia and Snake Rivers program. Keep the direction, land night and stops constant when comparing it with American Harmony; a ship listed on the route page is not confirmation of a cabin for your date.
Choose it for: The same river corridor on a different named riverboat, allowing a like-for-like route comparison.
The tradeoff: Choose the ship/date combination shown in the current schedule; a route page may list other ships and future seasons.

American Symphony — Highlights of the Mississippi
American Symphony’s Highlights of the Mississippi is a New Orleans loop with eight days/seven nights. The published sequence combines plantation and river-town visits with cruising time; a New Orleans extension can use the same arrival and return city.
Choose it for: A lower-river loop when New Orleans is both the city extension and the return point.
The tradeoff: Read which excursions, transfers and gratuities belong to the selected fare; do not compare a bundled fare with cruise-only pricing.

American Symphony — Upper Mississippi River
American Symphony’s nine-day Upper Mississippi program links St. Louis and St. Paul. The displayed northbound journey begins with a hotel stay and visits Hannibal, Muscatine, Dubuque, Winona and Red Wing; the reverse program changes some towns.
Choose it for: An upper-river itinerary with different endpoints and scenery from a New Orleans loop.
The tradeoff: Separate end airports and transfers are part of the trip; confirm the actual sailing and navigation-dependent changes.
