Southern US trips: historic cities, Florida and the Smokies

Charleston and Savannah reward neighborhood walks; Orlando needs a park-by-park plan; Miami combines city days with the coast. The Smokies are a different mountain holiday with gateway towns and changing road conditions.

Build one coherent trip

Choose a city pair, a Florida route or a Smokies base. A map of the South covers large distances: New Orleans, Miami and Gatlinburg do not make a compact weekend circuit.

Tennessee & North Carolina · 3–5 days

Great Smoky Mountains

Gatlinburg works for Sugarlands and town evenings. Townsend is a logical base for Cades Cove. Cherokee puts Oconaluftee and the North Carolina side first. Pick the side that matches most of your days.

When: Spring flowers, summer shade or fall color; higher roads have their own weather.

Getting around: Usually useful; choose one side of the park to reduce repeated crossing.

Gatlinburg at the edge of the Smokies

Tennessee · 3–4 days

Gatlinburg

Stay near the Parkway if walking to dinner matters. Book a cabin only after checking its actual drive to town and the park; a mountain view can come with a steep road and a longer return after dark.

When: Spring and fall for park outings; holiday and foliage weekends can be busy.

Getting around: Helpful for the Smokies; central lodging can reduce driving in town.

Lake Eola in downtown Orlando
Lake Eola in downtown Orlando

Florida · 4–7 days

Orlando

Build around a single resort area if most days are there. International Drive can suit a mixed attraction trip. Downtown or Winter Park works better for a city-focused visit than a daily theme-park commute.

When: Choose around your park calendar; summer brings heat and afternoon storms.

Getting around: Depends on the hotel and parks; verify the real shuttle schedule before skipping a rental.

Ocean Drive in South Beach, Miami Beach
Ocean Drive in South Beach, Miami Beach

Florida · 3–5 days

Miami

South Beach suits beach time and Art Deco streets. Brickell puts mainland transport and dining first. Coconut Grove suits a slower neighborhood stay, with a separate journey to the ocean beaches.

When: Winter and spring for a beach-led trip; check tropical weather during hurricane season.

Getting around: Optional for a focused stay; useful for the Everglades or an onward Keys trip.

Georgia · 2–3 days

Savannah

Choose a central historic-district base for a first weekend. Stay around Forsyth Park for a more residential setting. Choose Tybee only when beach time is the main goal and Savannah is a planned day out.

When: Spring and fall for walking; summer needs a slower midday plan.

Getting around: Optional in the Historic District; useful for Tybee Island and outlying sites.

South Carolina · 3–4 days

Charleston

Stay on the peninsula for a first city visit. Mount Pleasant can work for a mixed city-and-coast trip with a car. Folly Beach suits a beach holiday with one deliberate downtown day.

When: Spring and fall for outdoor time; summer brings heat, humidity and storm risk.

Getting around: Optional for downtown; helpful for beaches and sites outside the peninsula.

The Old Mill in Pigeon Forge
The Old Mill in Pigeon Forge

Tennessee · 3–4 days

Pigeon Forge

Choose a base around your main paid attraction and check transport before booking. A cabin provides space but can add winding-road drives to every meal or show.

When: Choose around attraction calendars; foliage and holidays can be busy.

Getting around: Usually useful; check trolley routes for the specific stay.

Jackson Square in New Orleans
Jackson Square in New Orleans

Louisiana · 3–4 days

New Orleans

The French Quarter suits a first visit with historic streets at the door. The Warehouse District is useful for museums and a slightly different central base. Check the exact block and noise exposure in either area.

When: Cooler months favor walking; festivals change crowds and prices.

Getting around: Usually unnecessary for a central stay; use transport for planned outlying visits.

Downtown Nashville from a pedestrian bridge over the Cumberland River

Tennessee · 2–3 days

Nashville

Downtown and SoBro suit a first visit centered on major sights and evening venues. East Nashville offers a neighborhood focus. Opryland and Music Valley are a separate base for plans centered there.

When: Spring and fall for outdoor time; events matter more than a simple high/low season.

Getting around: Optional for a Downtown weekend; useful for a wider neighborhood itinerary.

Lady Bird Lake in Austin

Texas · 2–3 days

Austin

Downtown is practical for a central first visit. South Congress suits shopping and nearby dining. East Austin offers a different concentration of food and evening venues; the exact block still matters.

When: Spring and fall for walking; summer needs heat-aware outdoor plans.

Getting around: Optional for a central weekend; useful for Hill Country extensions.
