Western US trips: Pacific cities, California coast and mountain parks

Choose a Pacific city break, a California coast road trip, or a park holiday with a useful entrance base. Yellowstone is a separate mountain region from California and Seattle; the West is not one compact driving itinerary.

When this region works

Coastal cities and mountain parks have different calendars. Snow and seasonal roads shape Yosemite, Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain trips; a coast route still needs current road checks.

Build one coherent trip

San Francisco–Monterey–Los Angeles is a coast route, Seattle is a city-and-outdoors base, and Yellowstone needs a gateway planned for its own park days. Build one geographic cluster before adding another.

San Diego

Downtown works for the bay and urban evenings. Mission Bay suits a slower family stay. La Jolla puts coastal walks and that neighborhood first, with a drive to many central sights.

When: Year-round for a city break; coastal cloud and water temperature vary by season.

Getting around: Useful for several neighborhoods; optional for a tightly focused central stay.

Seattle

Downtown or Belltown suits a first visit. Lower Queen Anne puts Seattle Center close by. Capitol Hill is useful for neighborhood dining and nightlife, with a different atmosphere from the waterfront.

When: Summer for longer outdoor days; other seasons work with indoor and rain alternatives.

Getting around: Usually unnecessary for the central city; useful for a separate regional trip.

Stay in the Valley for the shortest journey to its sights. El Portal serves the Highway 140 approach. Wawona or the south-entrance area makes sense when giant sequoias and the southern part of the park are central to the trip.

When: Spring for many waterfalls; higher roads have a shorter, variable season.

Getting around: Useful for arrival and separate park areas; use Valley shuttles where they fit.

An in-park stay reduces some commuting but needs early planning. West Yellowstone is practical for western access. Gardiner makes sense for the north entrance and northern areas; neither gateway is close to every sight.

When: The main road-trip season depends on road openings; winter requires a different plan.

Getting around: Useful for the summer road network; winter access may require specialized transport.

Union Square offers a central hotel district. Fisherman’s Wharf suits waterfront plans and a first visit. A neighborhood stay elsewhere works best when you actually want to spend time there.

When: Year-round city travel; layers matter even on a summer visit.

Getting around: Usually unnecessary in the city; collect one when a road trip begins.

Los Angeles

Hollywood works for a film-focused first visit. Downtown suits arts and central-city plans. Santa Monica is a separate beach-city base; it is not a quick walk or a consistently short drive from every LA sight.

When: Year-round with local differences; heat and coastal cloud can shape each day.

Getting around: Useful for a wide itinerary; a focused transit-linked visit can work without one.
