Your working day-by-day plan
Three full park days and two nights between them, with separate arrival/departure nights if necessary. Example bases are West Yellowstone then Gardiner; reorder the days to match confirmed rooms and operating roads.

Original map serviceDay 1 · Old Faithful
Old Faithful and a selected geyser-basin loop

Use the current eruption prediction to organize Old Faithful and the surrounding boardwalk area, then choose a manageable basin stop rather than every thermal site. Stay on designated paths and allow parking time. Return to the chosen operating south-or-west-side base instead of making a late cross-park drive.
- Transfer allowance
- 1.5–2.5 h
- Visits and walks
- 3.5–4.5 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops
- Old Faithful
- Overnight
- West Yellowstone
- Confirm first
- Check the operating road circuit
If the plan changes: Use open visitor-area options after checking current conditions.
Day 2 · Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
The Yellowstone canyon, then a northern base

Build the main interval around the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone viewpoints and a suitable available walk. Check road and viewpoint access first; a rim viewpoint and a steep descent are different choices. Move toward the confirmed northern overnight with time for food and wildlife-related road delays.
- Transfer allowance
- 2–3 h
- Visits and walks
- 3–4 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops
- Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
- Overnight
- Gardiner
- Confirm first
- Check the operating road circuit · Confirm the two overnight bases
If the plan changes: Shorten the walk or retain the first base if a road makes the move unsuitable.
Day 3 · Lamar River area
Northern landscapes and the real onward journey

Use an operating northern route and selected roadside viewpoints around the Lamar area where conditions allow. Keep a safe distance from wildlife and never stop outside permitted places to chase a sighting. The day ends at the booked gateway or onward connection, so protect the actual transfer rather than guaranteeing every valley stop.
- Transfer allowance
- 1.5–3 h
- Visits and walks
- 3–4 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops
- Lamar River area
- Overnight
- No night included after this day; protect the actual onward connection.
If the plan changes: Use an open northern visitor-area outing; add a night if the departure is too distant.
What to resolve before paying
- Check the operating road circuit
- Confirm the two overnight bases — after step 1
- Resolve any essential guided outing — after step 2
All time bands are planning estimates, not measured drives, timetables or operator promises. They exclude flight time and overnight sleep. Check live navigation, official access, your group’s needs and the actual booking.
Your choices at a glance
| Day | Main focus | Time rule |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Old Faithful and geothermal basins | One full area day |
| 2 | Canyon and nearby scenery | Choose accessible viewpoints deliberately |
| 3 | Northern areas or wildlife | Keep the onward drive realistic |
Geysers, canyon and north are different days
Old Faithful and nearby basins make the geothermal day; the Canyon area makes the canyon-view day; Mammoth and the northern area make another geographic day. The selected route should follow current roads and the places the group wants, not a promise to see every famous attraction in three days. Wildlife encounters and an eruption at a convenient moment are not guaranteed appointments.
Use the day allowances as planning estimates. Boardwalk visits, parking, slow traffic and necessary breaks can use more time than the map distance suggests. A West Yellowstone base works differently from a northern Gardiner base or a seasonal park lodge. Canyon Lodge’s operating dates are not confirmed here; check the lodge’s current booking calendar before making it an overnight base.

When time slips, remove an area instead of rushing every stop
Choose the day’s priority before leaving the accommodation. If road conditions or congestion consume the margin, shorten the optional basin or viewpoint interval and keep a comfortable return. Do not approach wildlife or leave designated safe areas to recover a photograph the schedule missed.
A seasonal road closure can change the entire geographic plan, not just add a few minutes. Check current NPS road status before reserving distant lodging and again before travel. Keep an alternative in the reachable area; three well-chosen days are a first visit, not proof that the park has been completed.

Choose the bed before the daily order
An in-park room can reduce driving, but availability, operating season and room amenities vary. West Yellowstone and Gardiner serve different sides. Check the entire three-day route from the actual accommodation.
Two bases can help on a longer trip, but three hotel moves in three days can consume the benefit. Compare the saved driving with packing, check-in and meal logistics.
The plan when a road or trail is closed
Check the park’s current roads and alerts before each day. Replace a closed stop with an open area nearby; do not improvise a remote detour without checking conditions.
For a trip outside the main road season, start again with the operating transport and accommodation. Extending this summer plan into winter by changing clothing is not enough.
