Original map serviceDay 1 · Miami
Arrive in Miami and settle into the chosen area

Choose the first outing around the actual room: Miami Beach and a mainland Miami base have different arrival journeys. Keep the evening to a nearby meal and walk if the flight allows. Resolve the rental pickup and Keys accommodation sequence before starting the island drive.
- Transfer allowance
- 0.5–1.5 h
- Visits and walks
- 1–2 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops

If the plan changes: Keep arrival short after a late flight.
Day 2 · Miami
One Miami area, explored rather than crossed

Choose Miami Beach for a beach-and-Art Deco day, or a mainland cluster such as a reserved Vizcaya visit with nearby time. Crossing between neighborhoods repeatedly can consume the day. Keep the final evening around the base and check the next day’s drive and weather.
- Transfer allowance
- 0.5–1.5 h
- Visits and walks
- 4–5 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops

If the plan changes: Use a named indoor interest near the base.
Day 3 · Islamorada
Drive into the Keys and choose an Islamorada base

Leave Miami for the selected Upper or Middle Keys base, allowing the actual road conditions, traffic and a meal stop. Once settled in, choose a short waterfront interval near the property. This is the start of the Keys portion, so a distant Key West visit belongs later in the route.
- Transfer allowance
- 2–3.5 h
- Visits and walks
- 1–2 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops
- Islamorada
- Overnight
- Upper or Middle Keys
- Confirm first
- Confirm rental and parking
If the plan changes: Use the arrival for a local walk, meal and conditions check.
Day 4 · Islamorada
A Keys day with one water or shore experience

Choose one locally operated boat activity with confirmed departure and conditions, or keep the day to accessible shore stops near the base. Weather can remove a water outing even when the room is available. Use the same accommodation tonight so a relaxed island day does not become another check-in day.
- Transfer allowance
- 0.5–1 h
- Visits and walks
- 3–5 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops
- Islamorada
- Overnight
- Upper or Middle Keys
- Confirm first
- Resolve the essential water outing
If the plan changes: Use a land-based alternative if weather or water conditions remove the outing.
Day 5 · Key West
Continue to Key West and settle into the walkable area

Travel toward Key West with legal stops and enough time for the hotel’s parking and check-in process. Use the remaining daylight for a compact Old Town walk. Keep any paid excursion for a day with its own departure allowance rather than attaching it to uncertain arrival traffic.

- 2–3 h

If the plan changes: Shorten the optional stops if traffic or weather changes the journey.
Day 6 · Key West
Key West on foot, with one main visit

Build the day around Old Town, a selected museum or historic visit, and waterfront time. The Southernmost Point is a short stop, not a whole-day activity. Allow queues and heat breaks, and choose any sunset boat program against the actual departure, weather and return journey.
- Transfer allowance
- 0–0.5 h
- Visits and walks
- 4–6 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h

If the plan changes: Use a named indoor visit and a shorter walk.
Day 7 · Key West
Keep a Key West weather alternative

Move the water excursion here if the earlier conditions were unsuitable, or choose a slower local day with an indoor visit and a neighborhood meal. Confirm current operation before reserving. Staying another night prevents an activity delay from colliding with the long drive back to Miami.
- Transfer allowance
- 0.5–1 h
- Visits and walks
- 3–5 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops

- Resolve the essential water outing
If the plan changes: Stay land-based if the boat activity remains unsuitable.
Day 8 · Miami
Return to Miami before the flight day

Treat the Keys-to-Miami journey as a substantial transfer with road and traffic uncertainty. Return to the final overnight base before an important flight rather than using the last island morning as a departure promise. Build the final evening around food, packing and the car-return plan.
- Transfer allowance
- 4–5.5 h
- Visits and walks
- 0–0.5 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 2–3 h
- Selected stops
- Miami
- Overnight
- Miami
If the plan changes: Keep the Miami return night rather than depend on a tight same-day flight.
Day 9 · Miami
Leave Miami using the actual flight timetable

Keep the airport transfer, vehicle return and check-in allowance together. A remaining morning interval should stay near the room or terminal route. Leave an Everglades extension for a separately planned day; it does not fit simply because it appears close on a regional map.
- Transfer allowance
- 0.5–1.5 h
- Visits and walks
- 0–1 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops
- Miami
- Overnight
- No night included after this day; protect the actual onward connection.
If the plan changes: Use an additional buffer if the return arrangements change.
What to resolve before paying
- Check official weather and access
- Reserve island and return nights — after step 1
- Confirm rental and parking — after step 2
- Resolve the essential water outing — after step 2
All time bands are planning estimates, not measured drives, timetables or operator promises. They exclude flight time and overnight sleep. Check live navigation, official access, your group’s needs and the actual booking.
Your choices at a glance
| Stop | Suggested nights | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Miami | 1–2 | City time before collecting the car |
| Key Largo / Islamorada / Marathon | 1–2 | A reef or water day with flexibility |
| Key West | 2–3 | Historic streets and an unhurried stay |
| Return to Miami | Travel day | Protect the onward flight with a buffer |
Durations and driving allowances are planning estimates, not live navigation. Check the route, weather and access before travel; add time for stops, queues and traffic.
Make the islands more than the drive
Key Largo and Islamorada give the upper Keys a different pace from Key West. Choose a snorkeling, boat or shore outing from the gateway where it departs, then put the overnight nearby. Weather can change a water excursion, so the accommodation and town should still make a useful stop without it. Keep the shore excursion beside the town you are staying in, rather than repeating long drives between Keys.
Key West works for a walkable town stay and a chosen historic or water visit. Protect an evening there instead of arriving after a long drive and leaving immediately. Parking and the precise hotel address can change the appeal of a cheaper room. A one-way rental is a different quote and return arrangement from bringing the car back to Miami.
| Base | Make time for | Booking dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Miami | Chosen beach or city day | Airport and actual rental collection |
| Upper Keys | A locally departing water or shore outing | Weather, departure point and overnight |
| Key West | Town time and an unhurried evening | Hotel location, parking and onward connection |

Treat the return as a transfer day
The same road serves many island connections. Check Florida traffic conditions and the local weather before committing to a tight return flight. A long transfer from Key West should not share a day with a distant, prepaid Miami attraction. If the departure is early, sleep nearer the airport or shorten the Keys segment.
Hurricane-season planning is about the actual forecast, warnings and booking terms; it does not mean every date is unsuitable or every sunny forecast is secure. Understand the accommodation and excursion cancellation rules before paying. Use an onshore alternative for ordinary bad weather, but follow official directions when a warning affects the journey itself.

Keep the water day movable
Snorkeling, diving and boat trips depend on conditions. Compare the operator’s weather policy, group size, equipment, swimming requirements and exact departure marina.
Leave a land-based alternative such as a museum or a town walk. A cancelled water trip should not leave the whole itinerary empty.
Check conditions before driving south
Read current road and tropical-weather information before committing to the drive. Evacuation guidance and storm closures take precedence over the itinerary.
Include mandatory lodging fees, parking and boat-trip taxes in the comparison. The budget calculator keeps group costs separate from per-person excursion tickets.
