A useful transit base and the actual harbor ticket.

A historic-center day, Back Bay and a separate Cambridge interval.
Choose interiors along the Freedom Trail rather than merely tracing its line.

New York · 3–5 days
Midtown is convenient for a first visit with Broadway and major sights. Lower Manhattan works for the harbor and Downtown neighborhoods. Brooklyn suits a trip that genuinely includes Brooklyn, rather than a daily commute to a Manhattan checklist.
When: Spring and fall for long walks; every season works with indoor alternatives.
Getting around: Usually unnecessary for a city visit; choose lodging near the subway.

Massachusetts · 2–4 days
Downtown suits a history-focused first visit. Back Bay puts the Public Garden, Copley Square and shopping close together. Cambridge makes sense when its universities, museums and neighborhoods are a real part of the plan.
When: Late spring through fall for walking; winter works for museums with warmer layers.
Getting around: Usually unnecessary in the center; useful only when adding a regional road trip.

District of Columbia · 3–4 days
Stay near a useful Metro station and choose between Mall convenience and a neighborhood evening scene. Dupont Circle suits dining and a more residential setting; Capitol Hill puts the eastern end of the center first.
When: Spring and fall for long outdoor walks; summer needs indoor breaks.
Getting around: Usually unnecessary; choose a useful Metro connection.

Maine · 3–4 days
Choose Bar Harbor for town services and eastern Mount Desert Island sights. Stay near Southwest Harbor for western-island plans. Treat Schoodic as its own outing or base, not a quick stop across the bay.
When: Late spring through fall; seasonal transport and roads need checking.
Getting around: Useful for the wider area; seasonal buses can help with selected park routes.
