Yellowstone’s geyser basins and canyon area reward different bases. Yosemite Valley is a different destination from an entrance on the map. At Zion, decide whether the day uses the canyon shuttle or an outing elsewhere before comparing the drive from your room.
An in-park room can put an early start close to the outing, but facilities and room types differ. Old Faithful Inn and Zion Lodge are specific lodging choices, not a promise of an identical resort experience. Read the operator’s actual room and arrival information.
Springdale, Tusayan, West Yellowstone, Townsend and Cherokee serve different park approaches. Compare the route through the relevant entrance and the return after dinner. A gateway name alone does not establish travel time to every trailhead.
A room, a campsite, a park entry reservation and a trail permit can be separate bookings. Follow the park guide’s current official checks and protect a usable alternative before committing to a nonrefundable stay.
| Base | Main benefit | Tradeoff to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the park | Shorter start for nearby sights | Seasonal operation, room facilities and booking access |
| Gateway beside the chosen entrance | Restaurants and an outside-park fallback | Entrance queues and drive to the actual sight |
| A second base during a longer trip | Less repeated driving through a large park | Packing, check-in and time lost on the moving day |
| A cheaper distant town | Another room choice when nearer options are unavailable | Full repeated driving and parking cost |

Start with a region you can reach, then choose the daily experience. Each destination below gives its season, useful bases and a local next step. The named hotels belong to that destination.

Tennessee & North Carolina · 3–5 days
Gatlinburg works for Sugarlands and town evenings. Townsend is a logical base for Cades Cove. Cherokee puts Oconaluftee and the North Carolina side first. Pick the side that matches most of your days.
| Base | Choose it for | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Gatlinburg | Sugarlands access and restaurants after a park day. | Traffic on the town approaches can slow the morning. |
| Townsend | Cades Cove and quieter evenings on the Tennessee side. | Fewer town attractions; a car does most of the work. |
| Cherokee | Oconaluftee and the North Carolina side. | The Tennessee attractions require a separate drive over or around the mountains. |

Arizona · 2–3 days
For a first visit, build the trip around the South Rim and choose a base before choosing a hotel. Grand Canyon West is a separate destination outside the national park; a ticket advertised simply as “Grand Canyon” may take you there.
| Base | Choose it for | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Canyon Village | Rim access when lodging operations are available. Reopening after the last verified closure is not confirmed here. | Read the NPS lodging notice before relying on an in-park reservation; Tusayan is the nearby outside-park alternative. |
| Tusayan | A gateway hotel close to the South Entrance. | You still need to enter the park; entrance queues can undo a tight schedule. |
| Williams | A Route 66 stop or a planned Grand Canyon Railway trip. | It is a substantial drive from the rim; not the base for several quick sunset visits. |

Utah · 2–3 days
Choose Springdale for a first visit built around Zion Canyon. Choose the east side for a quieter base and east-side scenery, accepting a drive to the main visitor center. Two nights beat a rushed stop between Las Vegas and Bryce.
| Base | Choose it for | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Springdale | Walking to restaurants and access to the main canyon. | Convenience can cost more; a Springdale address does not mean the entrance is walkable. |
| East entrance area | East-side scenery and cabin-style stays. | You cross the park to reach the main canyon; road restrictions can change the journey. |
| Hurricane / La Verkin | More services and a base for several southwest Utah stops. | Daily driving replaces the convenience of staying at the canyon. |

California · 3–4 days
Stay in the Valley for the shortest journey to its sights. El Portal serves the Highway 140 approach. Wawona or the south-entrance area makes sense when giant sequoias and the southern part of the park are central to the trip.
| Base | Choose it for | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Yosemite Valley | Early and late Valley time with less commuting. | Availability and room types can be limited. |
| El Portal / Highway 140 | A base on the western approach to the Valley. | You still have an entrance and a drive before the day begins. |
| Wawona / South entrance | Southern Yosemite and giant-sequoia outings. | Daily Valley visits require more driving. |

Wyoming, Montana & Idaho · 3–5 days
An in-park stay reduces some commuting but needs early planning. West Yellowstone is practical for western access. Gardiner makes sense for the north entrance and northern areas; neither gateway is close to every sight.
| Base | Choose it for | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Canyon / central park lodging | A multi-day visit that includes the canyon and several park areas. | Accommodation seasons, meal options and room amenities vary. |
| West Yellowstone | A town base with services near the West Entrance. | Entrance traffic and drives to distant areas add time. |
| Gardiner / North Entrance | Northern areas and a different arrival route. | Old Faithful and southern sights become longer days. |
