In this guide
A Valley day with an appropriately conditional second landscape.
All topics and planning links
Choose the Valley outing from the group’s ability
A suitable Valley walk around a chosen waterfall or viewpoint can provide the first day’s main activity. Use the exact NPS description for distance, surface and access. A well-known name is not evidence that everyone in the party can complete the route.
A guide can add explanation or organization for a specific outing. Read the actual starting place, transport, route and participation conditions. An authorized operator’s listing is not an NPS recommendation of one product over another.

Choose by time and effort
Check the official visitor information for current access, booking requirements and restrictions in Yosemite National Park before choosing dates or paying. The previous operational note is awaiting a fresh review.Road openings, fire restrictions and entry arrangements can change. Check the official conditions page before committing to Tioga Road, Glacier Point Road or a long hike. Never rely on a route planner alone for a seasonal crossing.
Time allowances below are our planning suggestions, including room for an unhurried visit. A specific tour’s duration, group size and ticket conditions must be confirmed with its operator.
| Activity | Allow | Starting area | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valley floor walks | Half to full day | An open Valley trailhead | Self-guided |
| Mariposa Grove | A separate half day or more | Mariposa Grove arrival area | Shuttle and walking when operating |
| High-country day | Full day if access permits | An open Tioga Road trailhead or viewpoint | Self-drive and selected walks |
What each option gives you
Valley floor walks
A first visit focused on cliffs, meadows and short walks.
- Allow
- Half to full day
- Start
- An open Valley trailhead
- Tradeoff
- Waterfall flow and path access vary with season and conditions.
- Booking
- Choose an open route from the current park map.
Mariposa Grove
Visitors who want giant sequoias as part of the trip.
- Allow
- A separate half day or more
- Start
- Mariposa Grove arrival area
- Tradeoff
- Shuttle service and trail conditions change seasonally.
- Booking
- Check access and the walking distance for your selected route.
High-country day
A longer stay during the high-road season.
- Allow
- Full day if access permits
- Start
- An open Tioga Road trailhead or viewpoint
- Tradeoff
- This is not a dependable winter itinerary and may be affected by other closures.
- Booking
- Confirm the road is open and use a Valley alternative if it is not.
Put the days in a workable order
- Spend the arrival afternoon in the Valley with a short walk.
- Choose one substantial Valley outing and leave time for quiet stops.
- Add the grove or high country according to road access, rather than attempting both in one day.
The high-country visit remains conditional
Tuolumne Meadows and Glacier Point require their own current road and facility information. Do not schedule both as small extras around a full Valley day. Their approaches and walking possibilities create different outings.
Use the current closure notices below when choosing the higher-country outing. Keep a second suitable Valley interval when the intended mountain route is unavailable. This is a planning alternative, not a claim that a specific replacement trail is open today.

Make the next stop earn another drive
After a substantial walk, allow a meal and a rest before adding another viewpoint. A family with younger children may enjoy fewer stops and longer intervals outside. A longer hike-led group needs an independently feasible return and no rushed onward connection.
Arrival-day traffic and parking can remove the time intended for a short visit. Save the main outing for a full day where practical, keep the next overnight compatible with it, and confirm conditions close to departure.

Named activities you can investigate
Choose the product, departure and participation requirements before paying. An admission ticket, guided walk and boat trip are different experiences.
