Original map serviceDay 1 · San Francisco
Arrive in San Francisco without rushing the coast

Settle into the chosen city neighborhood and keep the first outing nearby. A waterfront walk and dinner are enough after a flight; postpone the rental car until the coast portion if the booking allows. Check the current Highway 1 route before locking in the onward drive.

If the plan changes: A late arrival is a room-and-meal day, not a replacement full city day.
Day 2 · San Francisco
One San Francisco cluster, with time outside

Choose a city cluster such as the waterfront and nearby neighborhoods, or Golden Gate Park with a separate bridge viewpoint. Keep any timed visit as the day’s anchor and allow transit between areas. San Francisco’s hills make a map distance a poor substitute for a workable walking plan.

If the plan changes: Use a land-based city day if the preferred island visit is unavailable.
Day 3 · Monterey
Reach Monterey and walk Cannery Row

Collect the car and travel to Monterey. After checking in, use Cannery Row and the waterfront for a first peninsula outing. If you want the aquarium, put its actual ticket and opening conditions into tomorrow’s full day; arrival traffic should not decide whether the main visit happens.

If the plan changes: Use a shorter local outing if rental pickup or city traffic consumes the morning.
Day 4 · Monterey
Monterey’s aquarium or the peninsula coast

Choose the aquarium as a substantial indoor visit, or spend the main interval on the peninsula’s coast and Carmel area. Driving, parking and coastal walks still take time even when the map looks compact. Return to the same Monterey room and check the next day’s road connection before dinner.

If the plan changes: Stay local if coast weather or access changes the intended drive.
Day 5 · Cambria
Reach Cambria by the route that is open

Use the coast only if the complete planned Highway 1 connection is officially available. Otherwise choose the Highway 101 alternative and make Cambria the destination, rather than forcing a closed coastal segment. Settle into the village or selected coast base, with a short local walk when the arrival time allows.

If the plan changes: Use US 101 for the through connection, with an open coastal segment as a separate outing.
Day 6 · Santa Barbara
From Cambria to Santa Barbara’s waterfront

Keep the southbound transfer as the main task, allowing food and legal roadside stops. Once in Santa Barbara, a waterfront interval or downtown walk makes a more realistic afternoon than an additional long detour. Check parking at the actual hotel and leave a useful evening for the city.
- Transfer allowance
- 2.5–3.5 h
- Visits and walks
- 2–3 h

If the plan changes: Shorten the optional stops when the transfer is delayed.
Day 7 · Los Angeles
Choose your Los Angeles base before driving in

Head toward the neighborhood that matches your final city days. A Santa Monica-focused stay and a Hollywood-focused stay create different drives, so resist treating Los Angeles as one central destination. A short local outing after check-in is enough; leave the cross-city attraction for a day that includes traffic time.
- Transfer allowance
- 2–4 h
- Visits and walks
- 1–3 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops

If the plan changes: Use a local evening instead of crossing the city for another timed attraction.
Day 8 · Los Angeles
One Los Angeles area, explored properly

Choose one main area: the coast around Santa Monica, a Hollywood-and-Griffith outing, or a museum-centered day. Book the visit that needs a reservation, then build nearby meals and smaller stops around it. Keep the return to the hotel simple instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
- Transfer allowance
- 1–2 h
- Visits and walks
- 4–5 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h

If the plan changes: Pick an indoor interest within the same area if conditions change.
Day 9 · Los Angeles
Departure, or a separately planned San Diego extension

For departure, protect the airport and car-return journey using current traffic information. If extending to San Diego, add real travel and overnight time rather than counting it as a final Los Angeles attraction. The coast route ends well when the onward connection works without a last-minute dash.
- Transfer allowance
- 1–2 h
- Visits and walks
- 0–2 h
- Meals, parking & margin
- 1.5–2 h
- Selected stops
- Los Angeles
- Overnight
- No night included after this day; protect the actual onward connection.
If the plan changes: Add a night if the flight time cannot be protected by the planned return.
What to resolve before paying
- Confirm Highway 1 access
- Reserve the overnight sequence — after step 1
- Compare the one-way rental — after step 2
- Book essential timed attractions — after step 2
All time bands are planning estimates, not measured drives, timetables or operator promises. They exclude flight time and overnight sleep. Check live navigation, official access, your group’s needs and the actual booking.
Your choices at a glance
| Stage | Suggested nights | Driving allowance, before long stops |
|---|---|---|
| San Francisco | 2 | Keep the car parked or collect it later |
| San Francisco to Monterey | 1–2 | About 2–3 hours, route and traffic dependent |
| Monterey to Cambria | 1 | Allow most of a day with coast stops; check through access |
| Cambria to Santa Barbara | 1 | About 2.5–3.5 hours before stops |
| Santa Barbara to Los Angeles | 1–2 | About 2–4 hours; traffic can add more |
Durations and driving allowances are planning estimates, not live navigation. Check the route, weather and access before travel; add time for stops, queues and traffic.
Four coastal days worth protecting
Monterey is an aquarium-and-waterfront stop; the peninsula and Point Lobos belong to a different outing from a long drive south. Give one of those outings the best part of a day. Cambria is useful for a quieter overnight and access to the Hearst Castle area, while Santa Barbara gives the route a walkable city finish before Los Angeles. Choosing those days first makes the car a connection between experiences.
A useful seven-night outline is two nights in San Francisco, two in Monterey, one around Cambria and two split between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. This is an editorial allocation, not a package or a promise of road access. Add a night if you want both a full aquarium visit and a separate peninsula day, or if the last flight needs an early airport arrival. San Diego is an optional extension beyond Los Angeles, not a compulsory final stop on a seven-day coast trip.
| Coastal base | Protect time for | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Monterey | Aquarium, waterfront or peninsula outing | Long onward driving and every peninsula attraction |
| Cambria | Town, coast and a booked major visit | A late arrival plus an early timed ticket |
| Santa Barbara | Walkable center and waterfront | A tightly timed Los Angeles airport return |

Keep the coastline even when the connection changes
If Caltrans reports a closure, distinguish an open destination from an open through route. Monterey can still make an enjoyable base when the coast south is only an out-and-back. Cambria can serve the southern side. The overnight sequence may remain useful while US 101 replaces the connecting leg; verify each approach and avoid improvising a mountain detour from a map thumbnail.
Arrange the one-way rental around actual city dates, rather than paying for a parked car throughout San Francisco. Compare the drop charge, parking and an extra loop night as a single trip total. On the final day, choose either a Santa Barbara stop or a comfortable airport transfer if traffic makes both unrealistic. A coast itinerary should leave time at the coast, not turn its photographs into a sequence seen from the windscreen.

Make the Big Sur connection conditional
Read Caltrans road conditions immediately before travel and again before entering a remote stretch. A map app drawing a route is not confirmation that every section is open to through traffic.
If through access is interrupted, visit an open coastal segment as an out-and-back from Monterey or Cambria, then use US 101 for the connection. Keep that transfer day flexible rather than booking a distant timed attraction.
Book the constraints first
Reserve the scarce overnight stops and any must-do timed attraction before filling the route with optional stops. Check parking, luggage storage, mandatory fees and cancellation deadlines.
Keep a printed or downloaded route and enough fuel before remote coastal sections. Use our budget tool for one-way rental charges and parking; the daily rental headline is only part of the cost.
