Entry, shuttle and activity checks
Confirm entry, the current shuttle timetable and any separate activity requirement with NPS before travel.NPS currently requires no advance reservation to enter Zion or ride the park shuttle. Start with Riverside Walk, not an assumption about The Narrows
Riverside Walk takes you toward the river entrance from Temple of Sinawava. Use the dry walk as a complete outing when you do not want to enter the water. The Narrows beyond it involves current flow, flash-flood advisories and equipment that a normal city walk does not.
A guided product may help with planning or equipment, but it does not remove park conditions. Read the actual route, duration, inclusion and participation requirements before comparing a guide with independent walking. Leave time for the operating shuttle and its return.

Choose by time and effort
Check the official visitor information for current access, booking requirements and restrictions in Zion National Park before choosing dates or paying. The previous operational note is awaiting a fresh review.Angels Landing beyond Scout Lookout requires a permit. The Narrows depends on flow, weather and health advisories. A general park visit and the canyon shuttle do not require an entry reservation; check the park for your exact activity.
Time allowances below are our planning suggestions, including room for an unhurried visit. A specific tour’s duration, group size and ticket conditions must be confirmed with its operator.
| Activity | Allow | Starting area | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riverside Walk | Allow a half day with transport | Temple of Sinawava shuttle stop | Self-guided; use a ranger program for interpretation |
| The Narrows, bottom up | Reserve a full flexible day | Temple of Sinawava | Self-guided river hike; specialist outfitting is separate |
| Pa’rus Trail and canyon viewpoints | A flexible morning or afternoon | Visitor center area | Self-guided |
What each option gives you
Riverside Walk
A first look at the canyon without committing to a river hike.
- Allow
- Allow a half day with transport
- Start
- Temple of Sinawava shuttle stop
- Tradeoff
- The paved route is still exposed to weather and may have access restrictions.
- Booking
- Read the trail and shuttle notices before setting off.
The Narrows, bottom up
Travelers prepared to walk in cold, moving water.
- Allow
- Reserve a full flexible day
- Start
- Temple of Sinawava
- Tradeoff
- It is not an all-weather substitute for a dry trail, and conditions can rule it out completely.
- Booking
- Check flow, flash-flood forecast and current river advisories; equipment rental is not entry permission.
Pa’rus Trail and canyon viewpoints
An easier day, mixed walking abilities and a route that can be shortened.
- Allow
- A flexible morning or afternoon
- Start
- Visitor center area
- Tradeoff
- Shade is limited on sections; check the park’s accessibility information for your needs.
- Booking
- No tour ticket needed; verify current trail access.
Put the days in a workable order
- Arrive, check current conditions at the visitor center, then make a short Pa’rus outing.
- Use the canyon shuttle for Riverside Walk and one additional stop; keep a substantial gap for queues and lunch.
- Add a longer hike only if permits and conditions fit. Otherwise use the east-side viewpoints as a separate outing.
A permit is one condition, not the whole decision
Angels Landing requires its own permit. Its terrain and exposure still need to suit every participant. Do not make it the default family outing or assume a general park admission gives access to all named activities.
Choose a shorter trail or canyon-and-Springdale day when the permit, weather or group suitability does not work. The official hiking descriptions supply the actual distances and surfaces. A worthwhile visit does not require collecting the two most photographed hikes.

Protect the next driving day
An ambitious hike before a long transfer can leave the least alert part of the day for the road. Keep the main canyon outings beside the overnight base and use the departure day for a shorter stop if time permits.
For an eastbound route with an RV or trailer, use the current vehicle notice below. Measure the actual vehicle and build the permitted route into the transfer; an outdated tunnel-escort description is not enough.
Check the current NPS vehicle dimensions, affected highway section, exceptions and alternative routes before taking an RV or trailer through Zion. No current transit permission is confirmed here.NPS applies vehicle limits between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance. A single vehicle must not exceed 35 ft 9 in long, 7 ft 10 in wide, 11 ft 4 in high or 50,000 lb. Combined vehicles have a 50 ft total-length limit and a 26 ft hitch-to-rear-axle trailer limit, with the same width, height and weight limits. Measurements include mirrors and attachments; read the South Entrance exceptions and alternative routes before booking an RV journey.Checked 2026-10-08 · Source
