Hawaii

Maui

Choose South or West Maui as the main beach base, then give Haleakala and the Hana side separate days. A summit sunrise, a slow coastal road and an ocean activity are different commitments. A week on Maui does not need to include another island.

South or West Maui is the first choice

Kihei and Wailea create a South Maui base; Kaanapali creates a West Maui version. Choose where you want the beach and resort days, then examine the journeys for the excursions. A list of island highlights does not make every resort equally useful for them.

Use current local guidance for any Lahaina visit and affected access. Do not infer current operations from a historic town image or an old travel article. A resort’s availability and the status of a separate town or attraction require different checks.

Start with this decision

Kihei suits a practical base with varied accommodation and food options. Wailea suits a resort-focused stay. Kaanapali works for West Maui beach time, with longer journeys to some other parts of the island.

Keep Haleakala, the Road to Hana and an ocean excursion on separate days. After a long drive, spend the next day close to your base. A sunrise start and an all-day winding-road trip do not belong on the same ambitious schedule.

Compare accommodation areas in detail

A sensible first visit

  1. Settle into one beach base and keep the first day light.
  2. Alternate a major excursion with a day close to the accommodation.
  3. Leave a spare day for weather changes; avoid a distant excursion immediately before the flight home.

Choose the activities that fit

Haleakala summit

A landscape change from the coast. High elevation, cold and cloud can alter the experience.

Road to Hana

Travelers who enjoy a slow, winding drive and short stops. Motion sickness, restricted parking and private land make an improvised stop-everywhere approach poor.

A snorkeling boat trip

Travelers comfortable in the ocean who want a supported excursion. Conditions can change the site; wildlife and visibility are not guaranteed.

Before you book

Check the official visitor information for current access, booking requirements and restrictions in Maui before choosing dates or paying. The previous operational note is awaiting a fresh review.

Haleakala is another environment from the beach

The summit visit involves a drive into a high volcanic landscape. Sunrise has its own reservation and preparation question; a daylight summit outing is a different choice. Use the official NPS current requirements instead of assuming a park pass guarantees every entry interval.

Keep warmth, weather, the driver’s rest and the return in that day. A pre-dawn start followed by another long Hana drive is an unnecessarily fragile plan. Leave a local beach or rest interval afterwards rather than another distant fixed-time admission.

The road is part of the outing

A Hana-side day is about time on a coastal route and at the places you deliberately choose, not completing the largest number of pullouts. Road conditions, legal parking and individual site requirements determine the usable plan. The summit district and the Kipahulu coast are separate approaches within the wider Haleakala story.

Choose a guided road product when transport and explanation are useful, and read the actual stops and duration. Keep another local day free when weather or conditions displace the long excursion. A memorable Maui week can have fewer distant journeys and more time on its chosen coast.

A short day in South Maui

Use a car or a confirmed transfer between the coastal stops.

Allow roughly half a day, plus arrival and a meal. The times below are planning estimates; opening hours, reservations and current conditions need a separate check.

  1. Kihei, Maui

45–60 min · Start with a short town and shoreline stop rather than an island-wide drive.

  2. Wailea Beach Path

45–60 min · Choose a short coastal section after checking heat and beach conditions.

  3. The Shops at Wailea

45–60 min · Finish with a nearby meal and indoor rest instead of adding the Road to Hana.

Rest and lunch
Take lunch in Wailea; carry water even for a short coastal walk.
If the plan changes
Replace the coastal segment with Maui Ocean Center as a separate outing in poor beach conditions.
Access check
Confirm the chosen path’s entrances and slopes. Follow current county advisories and respect areas affected by recovery or restrictions.
